Goldstone boson counting in linear sigma models with chemical potential

We analyze the effects of finite chemical potential on spontaneous breaking of internal symmetries within the class of relativistic field theories described by the linear sigma model. Special attention is paid to the emergence of “abnormal” Goldstone bosons with quadratic dispersion relation. We show that their presence is tightly connected to nonzero density of the Noether charges, and formula...

Quasiparticle Description of Hot QCD at Finite Quark Chemical Potential

We study the extension of a phenomenologically successful quasiparticle model that describes lattice results of the equation of state of the deconfined phase of QCD for Tc ≤ T ∼ < 4Tc, to finite quark chemical potential μ. The phase boundary line Tc(μ), the pressure difference ∆p(T, μ) = (p(T,μ)− p(T, μ = 0))/T 4 and the quark number density nq(T, μ)/T 3 are calculated and compared to recent la...

Diffusion approximations to the chemical master equation only have a consistent stochastic thermodynamics at chemical equilibrium.

The stochastic thermodynamics of a dilute, well-stirred mixture of chemically reacting species is built on the stochastic trajectories of reaction events obtained from the chemical master equation. However, when the molecular populations are large, the discrete chemical master equation can be approximated with a continuous diffusion process, like the chemical Langevin equation or low noise appr...

Self-consistent quasiparticle model for quark-gluon plasma

Here we present a self-consistent quasi-particle model for quark-gluon plasma and apply it to explain the non-ideal behaviour seen in lattice simulations. The basic idea, borrowed from electrodynamic plasma, is that the gluons acquire mass as it propagates through plasma due to collective effects and is approximately equal to the plasma frequency. The statistical mechanics and thermodynamics of...

Avoiding the boson sign problem at finite chemical potential

The usual path integral formulation for scalar particles at finite density involves a sign problem, making numerical simulation impractical. We present alternative methods free of this difficulty. We apply these approaches to |φ | 4 theory in 2 + 1 dimensions, presenting preliminary numerical results for physical quantities in the vicinity of the phase transition in the T − µ plane.
